Tonight, the Masuk Boys Swim Team had one of their final home meets of the season and lost to their Newtown rivals, the Nighthawks.
Going into the meet, Masuk was aware that they would be going up against a high-scoring team. Freshman Aidan Cammarano said, “Newtown is very sophisticated, a very hard team to beat. They have really good sports, especially swim.”
The meet opened with Newtown winning the 200 Yard Medley Relay. In the next event, the 200 Yard Freestyle, Masuk’s sophomore Brendan Kierberger won with a time of 1:51. Masuk then lost the next events, the 200 Yard IM and 50 Yard Freestyle.
The Panthers’ junior Keller Hall and senior Sam McHugh placed both first and second in the 100 Fly, respectively. Masuk scored another win with freshman Carter Adragna placing first and senior captain Riley Sheppard placing third in the 100 Freestyle. Masuk then continued their streak with Kierberger winning the 500 Free with a time of 5:08.
Masuk lost the next two events, the 200 Free Relay and the 100 Back, but came back in the 100 Breast.
The night concluded with the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. In order to to secure a Panther victory, Masuk needed to come first and third in this event. However, the relay won by Newtown. The meet ended with a close score of 90-82, Newtown leading.
Despite the loss, the Panthers were not discouraged. Senior captain Joshua Ofori-Nkansah said, “I felt like we learned, we improved, a lot of us got our best times, and a lot of know what we have to do during practice to improve even more for our next meet next week.”
Mausk Boys Swim team is wrapping up their season, but are using every meet as a chance to improve themselves as athletes. “Today was a difficult fight. I will definitely be working on my technique more. But overall I think we did pretty well,” said junior Alex Malecki.
Masuk’s next and final home meet will be Tuesday, Feb. 21 against New Fairfield at six p.m.
