The first week of the NFL has now come to an end, and the league has given us some insight into what we might see. One of the many great games we saw was the Sunday Night Football game between the Giants and Cowboys. The Giants defeated the Cowboys 28-20 in a game completely controlled by the slight underdogs.
“Jaxson Dart performed really well, but I think his outside cast made him look even better. Skattebo played his game, which was really solid, and Likely, man, he is putting his name to the league. He went 8 for 8 on receptions, and he looked amazing out there. So yeah, the Giants are going to look good this year.” said Matt Boyle, a junior.
Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart shined in his first NFL season opener, throwing for 230 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. The Giants hope to carry that momentum into the rest of the regular season.
Another great game we saw this weekend was the Bears at Panthers. This game was really interesting as people expected the Bears to win, but nobody expected them to put up 59 points to the Panthers 37. This game was so high-powered that it set the record for the highest-scoring season opener ever, with a combined total of 96 points. Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams had an absolute field day against Carolina, throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns while also adding 65 rushing yards and two more touchdowns.
“Well, I think the Bears offense is going to continue to put up good performances, but nothing quite like what they were able to do against the Panthers in week one. So the firepower, it’ll be strong, but just not that strong,” said Sam Giampe, a junior.
We also saw some strong performances from known superstars around the NFL in week one. In Detroit, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs went off for 156 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in an overtime thriller against the Saints, which counted for 33.6 PPR fantasy points, not a bad performance for the number one overall pick. On the road in Houston, Bills quarterback Josh Allen had himself a field day against one of the top-ranked Texans defense. He threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns, including one of them to his new offseason acquisition DJ Moore. Josh Allen did not stop there because he also added two rushing touchdowns as well.
“I gotta say, Josh Allen put the team on his back. I mean, this is what I expected by drafting him in the second round. Everyone thought it was a little early for a QB, but I mean, you’re getting the best of the best. He is just constantly scoring touchdowns, I am so happy I picked him up, but yeah, I hope he does this all season,” said Trent Dellacato, a junior.
The Bills vs. Texans game was another high-scoring game, as the final score was 36-31 Bills in a back-and-forth game. Week one of the NFL season was so high-powered that it ended up tying the record combined score altogether. The cumulative score of all of the week one games was 791.
Week one gave us a lot to look forward to in the remaining seventeen weeks of the NFL season, and for your team, hopefully a couple of more weeks in the playoffs.
