On Monday, October 7th, Masuk Girls Field Hockey took to the field to face off against Joel Barlow in their 14th match of the season. However, the game held special significance for the team, as it was their 11th annual cancer awareness night, an event that has become a cherished tradition.

Although the game’s outcome was not as the team had hoped, they still managed to put up an impressive match and deliver a commendable performance against their opponent Joel Barlow in honor of cancer awareness.
“The team has all the skills they need; they just need to build their confidence,” said coach Laura Lageman.
From the very start of the game, the offensive players showcased their determination with their aggressive gameplay. Junior Abigail Troesser led the charge with fierce one-on-one battles. Complemented by junior Molly Kinahan and senior captain Grace Walker who made notable breakthroughs throughout the game, fighting hard against Barlow’s defense. Walker stood out specifically with a swift breakthrough during the third quarter.
Freshman Caroline Walsh displayed remarkable resilience, putting forth an immense effort despite taking a stick to the face midway through the match.
Even when Joel Barlow began to fight back, the Masuk defense was quick to respond and maintained their relentless spirit throughout the game. Senior captains Ava Moretti and Katya Reilly made several outstanding saves, and sophomore Eve Fernandez also contributed significantly, adding to the team’s defensive strength.
“They’re a great team, they have great teamwork with each other,” said Lageman. “We are going to work on our passing and our corners, it’s all coming together.”

Overall, while the final score may not have reflected their hopes, the team’s dedication and fighting spirit were evident, making an impressive effort in honor of cancer awareness.
Each year, the team selects a local organization or family to raise funds for in honor of cancer awareness. To generate donations, they host a raffle and bake sale at their games. In past years, the team has benefited local families, such as the Dubay family in 2023, who was present tonight, and the Davis family in 2022.
“I’ve known so many people affected by cancer and it is so great to be able to help raise money for an organization that gives back to them,” said junior Molly Kinahan.
This year, the team is focusing on breast cancer awareness and will be donating the proceeds to the Think Pink Monroe Foundation. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to assisting families in Monroe who have been affected by breast cancer. Think Pink Monroe strives to raise awareness and education about breast cancer in the Monroe community.

“It means so much to us that we are able to give back to the community who gives so much to us,” said Lagemen.
The team and coaches sported pink jerseys and socks and decorated the field in order to honor their Stick It to Cancer game. The team’s next game is a match up against Bethel away this Wednesday, October 9th at 6pm.
