Masuk students did not let the drag of a chilly Monday morning stop them from participating in the first day of the highly anticipated spirit week. Anything but a Backpack/Pajama Day proved popular as the hallways buzzed with students lugging their books in everything from baby carriages to laundry baskets.

Some students took to wheels, rolling along their books (and their friends) in wheelbarrows, wagons, and bikes, while others chose to bring in home staples; toting around mailboxes, garbage cans, and pots. Masuk junior, David Marciano, rode around in a mini pink motorcycle all day, no books to be seen, and junior Olivia Malewicki brought in a mailbox, with the intent of returning it after the day was through.

While the fun of this theme comes with its inherent practicality, some Masuk students brought it too far in the eyes of the administration. Due to its size, a paddle board was confiscated, and had to be docked in the hallways for the remainder of the day. Another student brought their younger sibling to hold their books, who was unfortunately escorted out of class by Officer Larson.

Anything but a backpack day is an exciting way to shake up the monotony of a school day, and add variety into a week of themes mostly pertaining to dress up. Students who experienced the theme during the 2021 spirit week were happy to welcome it back, and those new to the theme can only hope that it will be brought back in future.

  1. The Monotony of lugging around backpacks every day is truly a metaphor of sisyphus, and having a day specifically for kids to be able to choose what they bring, is a breath of fresh air through the smog-chocked hallways.

  2. I am definitely looking forward to this theme being brought back in the future, it was a very interesting way to give students an opportunity to be creative and have fun. Some people going a little overboard shouldn’t overshadow the very spirited people who came armed with the most ridiculous and hilarious things to carry their stuff with. The students governments outdid themselves this year, and I hope they keep it up!

  3. While this spirit day is very fun, in the end people bring in too many things that bring health risks or are just obnoxious in general I strongly think they should put a list of what hasn’t been tolerated in the past to prevent this from happening. All in all this article was well written and used a good pallet of words.

  5. This really shows how spirited everyone is and how into spirit week people get. The description of all the different items people used as a backpack was very well written. I really enjoyed reading about the random objects people brought! This was a great article and I enjoyed everything about it.

  6. I like how this article was short, but perfectly explained how exciting and random this day was. The detail and pictures both fit and described the article perfectly, and I like how the author included and talked about some of the most popular “backpacks”.

This really shows the creativity of students outside of schoolwork. Its a fun goofy way for students to express themselves or just be silly it really made me think of what could be practical yet fun enough to use as a backpack. I myself used a carseat and buckled my books into the seat lugging around the giant chair.
