On Tuesday October 17th 2023, Masuk students had a critical decision to make. Will they choose team Barbie; and deck themselves out in pink, cowboy hats and rollerblades? Or will they represent team Oppenheimer; and take on the day in 1950s-esque fedoras and suits?

Tuesdays theme heirs from the box office breaking opening weekend, affectionately coined Barbenheimer; where moviegoers enjoyed a double feature of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The contrasting aesthetics of the two films made for a perfect theme for this year’s spirit week.

“Team Barbie” students rolled out in a flurry of pink; many donning the iconic “Cowgirl Barbie” costumes and pink hoodies, proudly displaying that they are “Kenough.”

Some took it even further; Masuk junior Nick Kauke committing to spending the day in roller skates in order to recreate Ken’s iconic Venice Beach outfit.

Another notable Barbie costume was Ms. Gaber’s excellent take on “Weird Barbie.” She sported a choppy blonde wig, and scribbled-on mismatched clothing.

Team Oppenheimer students valiantly braved the schools unpredictable climate control in button ups, suits and fedoras. Imitating the look of Robert J Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, requires more effort and commitment than slapping on some pink and calling yourself Barbie, so to all of the students who spent time raiding their families closets in search of the perfect tweed overcoat and jaunty hats: we applaud you.

Barbenheimer day was a finger on the pulse homage to a current beloved trend, and the level of participation given by students and teachers alike made the day a smash hit.

  1. It was very pink and I thought I was going to have bleach my eyes. It was SO MUCH PINK.

  2. Staring as one of the Oppenheimer “look alikes” was a novelty that I am grateful to have, and seeing the two different sides and their respective colors was an interesting way to show the dedication of some students, and how far that they would go to show their style and creativity.

  3. Barbenheimer was an amazing glimpse of peoples school spirit. Almost everyone participated and it made the day ten times more fun. Even the teachers dressed up to show their school spirit. I loved everything about this day, and even if I wasn’t there, this article made it feel like it.

  4. This represents how distributed the Masuk was about Barbenheimer. Walking around the halls looking at everyone’s outfits was amazing. And the pictures in this article came out so good, and really are able to represent the day.

  6. This event is a great way to showcase how much effort some people put into spirit week, and how much fun the students at Masuk have participating in it. This was an interesting idea that let people express themselves and their creativity, with both students and teachers participating. The people at Masuk are not afraid to go all-out in the name of school spirit, and I love it.
