Masuk baseball ended their Senior Night on Tuesday with a 3 – 2 loss against rival Newtown. Their senior players included captains Greg Nivison and Ryan Fedeli, Deven LaRoche, Mason Hope, Drew Scalia and Cody Benegoss.
The first two innings saw no runs from either team. Starting pitcher Greg Nivison struck out several batters, and allowed two hits. Plays were made by shortstop Fedeli and second base-man Benegoss. On the hitting front, batters in the first two innings — continuing throughout the game — were Nivison, Fedeli, Scalia, LaRoche, Benegoss, juniors Colin Hope, Quinn McGuire and Carson Falcone, as well as freshman Jackson Zylick.
In the third inning Newtown scored two runs, pushing Masuk behind 2 – 0. The addition of a pinch hitter, junior Justin Feinstein, was not enough for them to catch up. Despite Feinstein taking over the pitcher’s mound in the next inning, Newtown gained another run due to stolen bases, keeping Masuk down three until a hit from Benegoss brought LaRoche home, ending the inning with Panthers down 3 – 1.
Inning number five was uneventful, both teams getting three outs without runs. The sixth inning started with another new pitcher, freshman Connor Fulchino, assisted by Zylick with a catch in center field. Heading into the bottom of the inning, there were still no runs from Masuk due to Newtown’s fielding.
In the final inning, Falcone hit a double, bringing home sophomore Tobey Bajda, subbing for Scalia at first base. However, the previous two outs quickly became three, leaving a tough Panther loss 3 – 2. Despite the loss, Masuk ended the regular season in second place in Southwest Colonial Baseball.
