Good Night, Hawks

Tuesday night, the Masuk varsity boy’s basketball team took the court against Newtown in the Newtown High School gymnasium. The game, ending with a score of 66-62, was a victory for Masuk and the 6th win of the season.

In the first quarter, Masuk players Stephen Sentementes, Tyler Newsom, Owen Smith and Matthew Domenichelli all contributed a score, yet five three-point shots from the Newtown offense left the Panthers behind 21-10 at the end of the first quarter.

“After the first, with us down, we knew the game wasn’t over just because Newtown was hitting every shot and we just had to play better,” Smith commented.

The game tightened in the second quarter thanks to scoring from senior Dylan Jacks, junior Ethan Palma and freshman Tyler Newsom.  Masuk scored 17 points and held the Newtown offense to only seven.

Masuk made some halftime adjustments that allowed the Panthers to open their lead to 13 points by the end of the 3rd quarter.

“We changed up our defense and made sure to be in help more and help the helper which led to a lot of steals and changed the momentum in our favor and with that we also started hitting more shots,” Smith said.

The Panthers held on to close the game out with a 66-62 win over their local rival. Jackson and Newsom were among the top scorers in the game with Jackson scoring a total of 25 points and Newsom scoring 23 points.

It is a win worth celebrating for the Panthers, beating the number two team in the Southwest Conference.

“Going into the game I wasn’t expecting much, I mean they were a tough team, I knew it was going to be a big game, like cross-town rivals, battle of ‘34. I think that we played great, not the first quarter though. The first quarter was slow, but we picked it up. definitely, a good one that gets us back on track,” said senior and captain Greg Nivison.

Masuk is now 6-6, and 10th in the league. The Panthers have eight games left in their regular season, four of those at home. The team plays next against New Milford on Friday, January 27th. Be there to support the boys and ride the green wave!
