Masuk Boys Basketball Brings in Another Win

The Masuk Boys Basketball team came out with a hard fought win last night against Darien.

Masuk’s starting line up of Tyler Newsom, Dylan Jackson, Greg Nivison, Owen Smith, and Ethan Palma helped the game start off strong with high intensity. With back and forth plays and a fast offense, the score quickly grew. The first quarter ended with a Darien lead 22-20.

First quarter free throw from Owen Smith

Junior Ben Londono commented, “During the beginning of the first quarter we played very fast and took a lot of quick shots which allowed Darien to get out and transition and score. We were able to adjust later in the first quarter and during the second quarter by slowing the game down and making them play at our pace, allowing us to score off good shots and get back on defense.”

Slowing down the pace allowed Masuk to pull ahead in the second quarter. With numerous additional points from Masuk, the quarter ended with a Panther lead 32-25. After a brief performance from the Masuk Cheerleaders, the Panthers were back on the court for the third quarter. Masuk kept up a strong offense as the game got more aggressive, each team having won 6 fouls in the period. Though both teams kept up the pace, Darien was able to pull into the lead, ending the third with a score of 35-34.

Their final quarter was exciting to say the least. The intensity only amped up, as did the tensions, each team winning 10 fouls in the period. Then with a close score of 47-46 and a Darien lead, Dylan Jackson brought Masuk ahead with a free throw, proving the Panthers were in it to win. With less than 30 seconds left Darien was awarded a free throw, but they couldn’t handle the heat. The Masuk Panthers won the game 48-47. The Panthers are looking forward to the prospect of the season to come.

Londono says, “Our goal this season is to win. This is one of the better teams we’ve had in a while and we’ve shown that we can compete. Our games against Trumbull and now Darien have shown that we can compete at the highest level against some of the better teams in the state, and I’m optimistic that we can continue playing this way throughout the season and make a good run come playoff time.”

Come out and see the Masuk Panthers face off against Joel Barlow on Monday, January 9th at 7:00pm.
