Girl’s Soccer Steals Another Win

On Thursday night the Masuk girl’s varsity soccer team, led by captains Grace Sheehan, Karina Morales, Alyssa Ianucci, and Elissa Campos faced New Milford on Benedict field.

The game kicked off with a slow first half resulting in 0-0. Masuk was on the attack, keeping the ball on offense for the majority of the first half. The team took 18 shots on New Milford’s goal. Among the top shooters, Sheehan took three, Hannah Dorney took seven, and Brianna Vanderheyden took seven.

“We have already had a great start to the season. It’s definitely been a change with the new coach however the team seems to be taking the adjustment well and we are finding more success this year. Our team’s goal is to win SWCs and as of right now we are on the right track,” stated captain Sheehan.

The game picked up in the second half and the referees began carding Masuk players for fouls. Varsity junior Davis, sophomore Lauren Eigo and sophomore Tati Fabryk all received a yellow card.

“The game picked up in the second half. The first half of the game was slow and we couldn’t shoot on the goal but as a team, we came together for the second half,” Vanderheyden said.

The girls began playing visibly more aggressively; Brianna Vanderheyden scored two goals on New Milford – one from a frenzy in the penalty box. Sami Dube assisted Hannah Dorney in scoring the third goal.

Masuk girl’s varsity soccer takes the field against New Milford.

“We need to work on finishing. We had 30 attempted shots on goal overall and only three were actually made so we are focusing on consistency and closing the ratio,” Sheehan added, commenting on what the team will focus on in the future.

The girl’s varsity soccer team has already played Bethel, Ludlow, and Weston in addition to last night’s game against New Milford. Masuk ended the game against New Milford with a score of 3-0, and with a season record of 3-1, girl’s soccer is set to have a successful season.
