Wednesday marked one of Masuk’s best-loved Spirit Week themes: Color Wars. The grades went monochrome, with freshmen in purple, sophomores in green, juniors in blue and seniors in black. As we reflect upon this day, we must ask ourselves: who did it best?
Color Wars is a theme unique in its opportunity. You could go simple and just wear a hoodie, or full-out and represent your class with body paint and hair glitter. For their first year, the freshmen took no prisoners. There was no shortage of spirit, and the 9th graders did not hesitate to go all out. Some honorable mentions include full faces of purple, tutus, and ski goggles.

When it came to the sophomore class, it seems that Saint Patrick’s Day arrived early. The halls were filled with what I can comfortably assume is all of Party City’s green stock, and the sophomores showed clear enthusiasm for their class.

The juniors turned Masuk from the Red Sea to the Blue One and provided some fierce competition. To my mild disappointment, they did not hail inspiration from last year’s junior class and show up as smurfs, but the effort was there nonetheless. Some honorable mentions include a chic shark onesie and a blue feathery headdress.

The seniors mourned their last color day rather appropriately- in black. Many wore senior jerseys, t-shirts, and other forms of black to represent the graduating class, but some took it one step further. Seniors Casey Cummings and Alexis Read seem to be gunning for the “most spirited award” if their tuxedos and bald caps were anything to go by.

Unfortunately, the bonfire that was supposed to coincide with Color Wars had to be rescheduled due to safety concerns due to the dry conditions. So far this is only a postponement, but replicating the Spirit Week excitement on any old day will be a difficult feat.
A classic, Color Wars delivered exactly what it was supposed to. The classes bonded over their shared spirit with a theme that even the least adventurous dressers could get behind. Tomorrow brings Theme Day, where freshmen will rock Western attire, sophomores in Greek life, juniors superheroes, and seniors camo.
