Today, Tuesday Mar. 12, Masuk’s Unified Sports team faced the Joel Barlow falcons in a basketball game.
After warming up, the teams went into a jump ball that was won by Barlow. Yet this did not bring the panthers down. They continued to play valiantly, and the first basket was made by Masuk player Lexie Figueiredo.
This was not the first time that Masuk faced Joel Barlow this year. Cindy Boulard, one of the team’s assistant coaches, said, “They did a tournament a couple weeks ago at Joel Barlow so we knew the team. Steve Swenson, our principal, reached out to them and saw if they wanted to come play a game.”

The rematch was a success, with both teams giving the game their all. Masuk’s skill on the court was largely helped by their weekly practices.
“Every week we practice for 45 minutes,” said Boulard. “You know, they’re learning how to work together as a team, they’re learning about partnerships, they’re learning about winning and losing. They’re doing such a great job.”
Leading the team was captain Emme Broderick. Broderick’s favorite part of being captain is the ability to help others. This was evident as she helped her team do their best on the court.

Overall, the team’s upbeat energy was what aided them in the perseverance that they demonstrated during the game.
“Everyone’s very positive and happy,” said freshman Hadassah Gee.
Next week the Unified Sports team takes a swing at volleyball. If their performance continues as it did today, they are going places.
