Year after year, hundreds of girls flood dress stores looking for their perfect prom dress. The dress that fits them best, that they feel the best in…and also that no one else has, and is not an overused color, and is not too unique while still being unique enough. Criteria for getting a prom dress has soared beyond simply getting a dress you love. But shouldn’t that be the only thing that matters?

The fear of not twinning with someone else has annually fueled a Masuk Prom Facebook page where people post their dresses so that no one else gets the same one. I definitely think the page is a good idea, but, in a way, it creates a timed competition between everyone to find and post their dress. Prom is still months away, but posts have been popping in for several months already.

About the Masuk Prom Dresses Facebook page

“I think that if you’re wearing the exact same dress, in the exact same color, it can become a little problematic,” junior Gabriella Assignon said. The Masuk Prom page was created to prevent this. “But, depending on the person. Personally, I don’t think I would be too upset if I was twinning with someone.”

Twinning with someone at prom definitely is not ideal. But if you both love your dress and feel comfortable, it should not be an issue.

“I tried not to get the same exact dress as someone,” senior Aoife Riordan said. “But I kind of just got what I liked.”

With the Facebook page and people sharing their dresses, word has quickly spread this year that blue is the color everyone is wearing. And following that, there was a push for everyone else to avoid the color.

“I was advising against wearing blue, strictly because it’s such a popular color. But if you don’t mind that at all, I’m not gonna stop anyone,” Assignon, who bought a blue prom dress, said.

Every year, there are certain colors that are more popular at dances. And sometimes, those hold people back from getting their dream dress.

“Everybody’s gonna wear a color,” Riordan said. “There’s gonna be repeats no matter what.”

The same concept applies with dress styles. No matter what, there are going to be repeats. And chances are, even with the Facebook page, there are still going to be people who wear the same dress at prom. But so what? If you love your dress, what other people are wearing should not affect you. And, it definitely should not ruin your prom night.
