Lunch serves as a break during a long school day, offering students a chance to refuel and socialize with their friends. However, one common obstacle may stand in the way of lunch actually being enjoyable: the lunch waves. Whether someone was assigned to A, B or C, these waves can often lead to challenges for Masuk students. These difficulties can only lead to one burning question: which lunch wave truly reigns supreme at Masuk?
From my perspective, A lunch is the best wave. Students get to have the first lunch of the day while also getting the added bonus of a longer break since A lunch comes right after flex.
Having the first lunch comes with many benefits people do not even realize. This includes the food being the freshest and not having it run out as it does in other later lunches.
I have C lunch on both red and white days and whenever I get to the cafeteria I do not know how many times I have heard the lunch lady say, “We’ve run out of everything and now only have fries.”
Everyone left in line is then stuck with having plain, unsalted fries with no ketchup because sometimes the bins either run out of packets or the pumps are empty. And as we all know, having only fries for lunch is sure to be a very nutritious meal.
However, this opinion is not uncommon.
“I think A lunch is the best wave,” said freshman Addison Scott. “There’s definitely a lot more people than when I have B lunch and the cafeteria has more food in the mornings than in C or B when it’s all gone.”
The first lunch wave also comes with an added perk of being able to study more for a third or fourth period test. This is especially useful if someone was not able to complete something during flex.
“I don’t know how many times having A lunch has saved me,” said senior Elise Graham. “It’s either I needed to study more or I forgot to do my homework. It’s nice to have the chance to do those things before third period during my lunch.”
While A lunch may be the best, what about the others? The second lunch wave at Masuk, B lunch, is the non-existent wave. No one talks about it or knows many people who are in it. Out of ten students I asked, only two said they had B lunch, proving my point.
“I hate having B lunch,” said sophomore Chris Yuskas. “It’s at a weird time and kind of annoying. I have to stop what I’m doing in the middle of class just to have to come back to it. I’d rather get it all done and just have C lunch.”
Scott had a similar opinion to Yuskas and said, “I think having B lunch gets really annoying, especially when I forget what I learned in the first half of class before lunch.”
The last lunch wave, C, is always the one students find themselves struggling to get to. From having last lunch both days, I personally know the hardship of having to go through a boring class just to get to lunch. Occasionally, the strength of hunger can lure me away from class, causing me to become easily distracted.
Although I might favor having lunch earlier in the day, it is entirely plausible that others would prefer having last lunch. When having A lunch, the rest of the day may feel longer, unlike in C lunch, when there are two individual breaks making it feel shorter.
“I sometimes get hungry during third period, but I think it’s better to just get it over with. Then all I have left is fourth but with A lunch, third and fourth period feel like forever,” continued Yuskas.
Even though there are many flaws to the lunch waves, one factor seems to be the most dominant. It truly all depends on whether or not someone’s friends are in that lunch wave, and if they are not, it can be dreadful. I am very familiar with this as most of my friends are in A lunch, leaving me behind in the conversations they go through.
“It’s kind of hard to pick between them all since I really just base them on if I have friends in that lunch,” said sophomore Erin Ronaghan.
Nonetheless, many students’ opinions differ on what is the best lunch wave at Masuk. It all depends on the person, their classes and their needs. Some may say that B or C are the best, but everyone knows that the true answer is A lunch.
