On Jan. 26, Masuk restored the old tradition of having a winter pep-rally celebrating the winter sports and their captains. The pep-rally included an assortment of different games and mini competitions from students of different grades and teachers. There was also a performance from the Masuk Cheerleading team, and a sweet good-bye to exchange student and senior Giulia Celani, who is going back to Italy.

To start off the pep-rally, was a duet performance of the Star-Spangled Banner on the electric guitar with senior Sean Cammarano and sophomore Brayden Callahan.

It then led into appreciation of all of the winter sports team captains, including wrestling, boys and girls indoor track, boys basketball, girls basketball, girls hockey, the defending state champs – boys hockey, boys swim, the dance team and the cheerleading team.

“We wanted to show the winter sports teams a little more recognition because we feel like all the fall sports teams got all the hype with spirit week and the pep-rally in like the fall so we wanted to show the winter teams the same appreciation,” said junior Sara Dankenbrink who is a part of the Red Army.

Before the games began, the cheerleaders took the floor and showed off their school spirit.

The mini games started out with a “Minute to Win It” basketball game with each basketball player making a basket, each time from a farther distance away. The winner of this game was freshman Brody Philbin.

Next was a “Sumo Wrestling” game, where two students from different grades would put on plastic inflatable ball shields and try to knock their opponent on the outside of the circle. The winner of this mini game was junior Zumails Soriano.

The following was a “Sumo Soccer” game. This had the same idea as the previous one, but this time the students would be playing soccer. The winner for this mini game was senior Kasper Murzinski. He was matched up with history teacher, Greg Parkhurst. While Parkhurst tried to defend his goal, Kasper shot at him making him the victor.

The final game was the “Hungry Hippos” game. This involved a group of students from each grade trying to get as many plastic balls into a basket as quickly as they could. The catch was that one student was rolling on their stomach on a cart while the other students on their team were maneuvering them by holding their legs.

The students on the cart are supposed to grab as many balls as they can and lead them back to the corner. The winners for this mini game were seniors Ollie Panella and Giulia Celani.

The final event of the pep rally was a basketball game between a group of eight seniors and nine teachers. These teachers and students went head to head in a basketball game.

The game started off with senior Emma Cusa scoring a three pointer. Though the students had a strong lead at first, the teachers brought it back and ended up beating them by one point, ending 14-13. The most notable teacher players were Michael Collins, Daniel Young and Brian Hourigan.

A special thank you to The Red Army and Joel Castillo for making it possible.

One response to “The Restoration of the Winter Pep-Rally”

  1. I personally HATE pep rallies because they make my head hurt. But school spirit is pretty amazing. Not that I would be one of the people that dress up like crazy, but it’s fun to see what people do! I also think that the winter one was just really out of the blue. With the fall one, it had a whole week of build-up. With the winter one, it was announced one time, then it just happened.
