Jersey Mike’s and Subway are food chain competitors that have both hot and cold sandwich options, served on top of various grinders. These similarities may pose a question to sandwich eaters of Monroe on which is more worth visiting. The answer to that question is undoubtedly Subway. From more toppings to free reign on customization, Subway just does it better.

“Probably, like five” is the amount of toppings that Senior Gwen Giugno was able to count at Jersey Mike’s. “At Jersey Mike’s you get less of that freedom because they only have ingredients for their subs that they have set.” She added.

This matches my experience at Jersey Mike’s. I walked into Jersey Mike’s opening day with a coupon for a free cold sub and discovered that many sandwiches there have just meat and cheese before adding lettuce, tomatoes, and a small selection of other toppings. When was the last time you got any kind of olive on any Jersey Mike’s sandwich? Currently, there’s a petition on Change.org running for Jersey Mike’s to include black olives among its already slim topping offerings, a topping that Subway has offered for as long as I can remember.

Subway allows you creative freedom too. You can choose from the expansive menu, but you are just as welcome to start from scratch.

“I like the setup better, they have it so that you can make your own” Said Senior Lindsey Dubois. “I think that Subway allows more creativity with your food choices” She added.

This is true. Every Subway is purposely built in a way that allows you to create a sandwich and follow it down the line, starting with bread, meats and cheeses, vegetables, and finally condiments. I get to create a sandwich that is truly mine and aligns with my preferences perfectly. I don’t believe that Jersey Mike’s encourages anywhere near the same level of creativity in sandwiches, and that is why Subway is better.
