After four weeks of friday nights, torrential rains and extreme heat, Masuk has climbed to a 3-1 record going into the bye week. Now ranked 3rd in state class and 21st in the state, the Panthers are looking at a successful season.

To start off the season, Masuk dismantled Killingly in a 43-20 rout. Just like the season before, senior running back Jason Champagne pounded the rock all night. On the day, he racked up three total touchdowns, one on a punt return, as well as 150 yards from scrimmage. A statement game for Masuk, as many of the newer varsity players displayed their abilities.
In week two, Masuk was on the road again, facing Stratford. Led by Jason Champagne, Masuk ran through the Red Devils with a final score of 50-12. Champagne led the charge with two touchdowns for over 150 yards on the ground, while senior quarterback Robert Klein passed for over 200 yards and two passing touchdowns.
Week three was the first time the Panthers would take the field at home. Their opponent was Bloomfield, arguably the best team they’d met so far. Taking a 43-26 lead against Bloomfield early in the second half, Masuk would let 24 unanswered points slip away in the remainder of the game. The biggest hit came when Rob Klein would take an awkward tackle and damage his wrist, causing him to be sidelined for the rest of the game. Masuk came close, but was not able to climb back in a 43-50 loss.

In the most recent game, Masuk faced the Bunnell Bulldogs. Despite the severe conditions and rainfall, the final decision dictated that the game would be played regardless.
During the rainy night, Masuk was able to beat the Bulldogs through two defensive touchdowns coming from an interception and a costly Bunnell fumble. Freshman quarterback Aaron Champagne took a few snaps, but his older brother Jason played the majority of the game in wildcat formation.
Red Army senior member and fan, Matt McCloat, cited this game as his favorite moment: “My favorite game was the one against Bunnell, when Jason Champagne was running the ball like a maniac.” Even though the quarterback situation was cause for concern coming into the game, Masuk fought through the torrential rains for a gritty, important SWC win.
The Masuk Panthers season has gone very well and they are shaping up to be serious contenders this year. With big plays abundant on either side of the ball, they are able to win games on defense or offense. Despite the murky quarterback situation, the team has continued to show up and win.
